Terminology

The RAF Air Cadets, like most military formations, use a lot of abbreviations, acronyms and other terms that may not be obvious for those new to the organisation/military life.

Below is a table of commonly-used terms and their meanings

Term Meaning
Civvies Civilian Dress: non-uniform clothing worn for activities where a particular uniform is not required, or is not appropriate
HQAC Headquarters Air Cadets: the headquarters of the Air Cadet Organisation. Also known as HQ RAFAC
HSD/SD Home Service Dress/Service Dress: used to distinguish the different types of uniform worn
JI Joining Instructions: the information provided to attendees regarding an event including location, timings, equipment, and other relevant information for them to be able to participate
LFMT Live Firing Marksmanship Training: training sessions on a range where Air Cadets fire live ammunition at wooden targets
PTS Progressive Training Syllabus: a collection of training plans for a range of Air Cadet skills which are divided into sets of varying levels of difficulty: Blue (Foundation), Bronze (Intermediate), Silver (Advanced) and Gold (Expert)
RA Risk Assessment: A document produced to assess the risks of an activity and state the procedures in place to minimise the risk level

RIAT Royal International Air Tattoo: the largest air show in Europe, hosted in the UK
TG Training (Ground): The Ground Training department of HQAC, specialising in non-aviation training subjects
WHT Weapon Handling Test: an assessment of competence carried out with all personnel to ensure they know how to handle a specific weapon safely
