As I walked through the main gates of Valley, I was excited but nervous. The squadron I visited was very exciting: the fighter jet squadron is commonly known as 19(F) or "Tiger" squadron. I was shown around a Hawk, inside it, and was also allowed to sit in it. I was also shown how combat practices were organized.
Air Traffic Control was also very good. Firstly, I was shown the Radar room, where I was shown how the aircraft were picked up on Radar and how weather was logged.
BRAMA was the only civvy unit I went to, but it was one of the best. I had a health and safety brief and then was issued boots with metal toecaps, coveralls, and ear defenders. Every time a Hawk comes in or goes out, it has to be serviced. This is where a linesman/woman goes and checks everything is working. I cleaned the windows and helped refuel. I also undid the wheel stoppers just as the aircraft was taxying.
SARTU (Search And Rescue Training Unit) was yet another good section. I was shown around a Griffin, shown all the safety equipment, and learned how the maps were read. I sat in on a briefing which was good.
I asked about the RAF selection courses, Officer Training, and what would help me to get there. When I go to University, I have got to find a University Air Squadron where I will find it easier to train.
All the pilots, aircrew and RAF personnel are friendly and explain everything fully.
It was a brilliant week and I advise anybody to go for work experience there. Just don't ask anybody if they want a cup of tea, or you'll end up making 20!
