Chivenor held its third Open Day in four years on Sunday, May 16th. The Open Day was introduced to enable parents of cadets and local community members to see what sort of activities we run at the unit. The presentation began at 3pm with a march-on of the unit and inspection by the South West Regional Commandant, Group Captain Skelley, who was escorted by our two officers, Flt/Lt Powell and Plt/Off Cole. During the inspection, Group Captain Skelley spoke to several of the cadets. |

After the inspection, the Group Captain made several presentations
to the cadets, including several Wing and Regional Blues for sport, and
Chivenor's own set of awards: The Boot Trophy for best uniform to Cdt Cpl
Jordan, The Blade Trophy for Best Cadet to Cdt Green, The Mortar Trophy for
Sport to Cdt Cpl Rafferty, The Shooting Shield for Rifle Shooting to Cdt
Shearsby, and the Cadet Of The Year award to Cdt Barney. Once the presentations
were out of the way, all the cadets changed out of uniform to prepare for the
displays. To begin with, the Red Barrows performed a routine while the other
displays were set up. These displays ran for the remainder of the afternoon, and
demonstrated several different aspects of training: First Aid, Radio
Communications, Weapon Training, Camp Cooking and Tentcraft ,and Initiative
Exercises. There were also several static displays: a Sea King SAR helicopter
from 22 Squadron, a vehicle from 59 Commando Unit, and a Glider from 624
Volunteer Gliding School.
